The Ultimate Box- & Goddess-Braid Inspiration

Box and goddess braids are both go-to protective styles in the African-American community — you can wear them for months at a time, they don’t require a ton of maintenance, and they can help protect your hair during the winter and summer months.

Both styles were particularly huge hits in the '90s and have been making their way back to the beauty forefront over the past couple of years. In fact, "box braids" and "goddess braids" styles were the top hairstyle search terms of 2015, according to a recent Google report.

"These braid trends are seasonal (with searches peaking in the summer months), and are most popular in the South," the report reads. "Both come in a variety of styles, so consumers are searching for different ways to wear both looks."

In honor of the "trending" 'dos, we've rounded up braid inspiration in both celebrity and real-girl Instagram form. Thinking of getting braids soon? Read up on everything you need to know before taking the plaited plunge.

Beyoncé — who pulls off thigh-grazing blonde box braids like only Beyoncé can — is one of the main celebrities associated with box braids searches, according to Google. Janet Jackson and Keri Hilson top the list, too.

Interested in creating goddess braids (which are essentially chunky cornrows) yourself? Check out this step-by-step video to learn how.

Get even more creative by playing with color — ombré box braids, anyone? As for daily styling, keep the look fresh and trendy by adding in some double-bun action.

When it comes to goddess braids, both Ciara and Love & Hip-Hop Atlanta star Rasheeda Frost won out in terms of search volume.

Take a cue from the queen of '90s braids Brandy, a.k.a. Moesha, and top your mini plaits off with an adorable headband.

A goddess braid updo, like this one, is perfect for a formal occasion.

Zoë Kravitz's badass undercut adds an edgy twist to her box braids, which she shows off with a high ponytail.

Solange gathers her braids atop her head in a big bun fit for a queen.

Fancy your braids up with some '80s-inspired rings.

Singer Keri Hilson styles her butt-grazing braids in a some-up-some-down 'do. Gel down your baby hairs to really complete the look.

Gabrielle Union turned her tiny boxed plaits into one large side braid that's both easy to do and refreshingly chic.

A box-braid bob and bun. Try saying that three times fast.

No mention of box braids is complete without noting the bulky box braids Janet Jackson made famous in the '90s film Poetic Justice. A classic look that will live on in our hearts an on the big screen.

Charlie Hebdo Cartoonist Calls For More "Music! Kisses!" Following Paris Attacks

In the wake of a series of coordinated terrorist attacks in Paris Friday evening that left 127 people confirmed dead and at least 200 more injured, a cartoonist for the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo urged those who #PrayForParis to shift their focus towards celebrating life.

"Friends from the whole world," Joann Sfar posted in a cartoon on Instagram. "Thank you for #PrayForParis, but we don't need more religion! Our faith goes to music! Kisses! Life! Champagne and Joy!” he wrote, capping off the message with a call for joie de vivre in the form of #ParisIsAboutLife.

Few know the impact of such horrifying terrorism as was seen in Paris last night like those at Charlie Hebdo. The controversial magazine dominated headlines this past January after gunmen armed with automatic weapons attacked the publication's Parisian office, leaving 12 people dead, including police officers, staff editors, and cartoonists. Following those attacks, hundreds of thousands of people rallied together in solidarity with Paris. In the days that followed, heartbreaking and inspiring stories of courage emerged and many took to social media using the hashtag #JeSuisCharlie to express their sorrow and solidarity. And the provocative magazine returned, selling out its subsequent issues mere hours after they hit stands.

A similar outpouring is taking place as we speak as the world tries to process the harrowing events of last night. And in that spirit, we choose to follow the lead of this clever cartoonist and say: Cheers to Paris! Cheers to life!

The Mysterious Allure Of Blue Hair

Ever since we first laid eyes on Kate Winslet's Clementine in Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, blue hair has always embodied a kind of phantasmagorical beauty in our brains — elusive, otherworldly, ephemeral. But in contrast to this dreaminess, there is also an intangible IDGAF facet to the shade.

That might be why over the past year and a half, more and more celebs have taken the plunge into the deep blue sea. Nicole Richie, Demi Lovato, Sky Ferreira, Gwen Stefani, and Katy Perry (in her new CoverGirl ads) are just a few stars that come to mind. It appears that, like Picasso, we're experiencing a beauty blue period.

The history of the color blue begins as one that is demure and humble. According to Anne Varichon, an anthropologist specializing in the field of color and author of Colors: What They Mean And How To Make Them, blue held no real significance until the Middle Ages, when the color came to be associated with the Virgin Mary and was then eagerly adopted by the monied upper class as a signifier of wealth.

Since those early days, blue has gone through a multitude of iterations and associations, but the big turning point for the color's modern representation was the creation of jeans in the middle of the 19th century. "It created an association between blue and work. But in the 1930s, jeans became synonymous with leisure and; in 1960, rebellion, with the hippie movement; and finally, youth, leading the color blue to become more and more significant," says Varichon.

Because of how commonplace the color became, it evolved from a hue of decadence to one of conformity. "Today, the color blue, which has become consensual color: The color of the flags of international organizations and the one that any person who does not wish to be noticed wears — since, indeed, everyone wears it." But Varichon notes that this conventional color gets decidedly unconventional when seen on the lips or hair.

For many, blue in beauty remains special and exclusive — a color that somehow manages to capture the inner thoughts and emotional tapestry of the wearer and convey that complexity and power to the world. "Blue is this very interesting color where it's very bold and very daring, but it has that calming factor," notes Hairstory colorist Roxie Darling.

Funnily enough, it's also a way to reclaim one's power. "Blue has pretty much been a predominately male color, so I think that a girl choosing it is kind of interesting, because it's such a masculine color. Blue also can mean safe," says Darling. "Blue is a very safe color."

Hair icon Christiaan Houtenbos— who recently added a bold blue stripe to his chameleon mane and called it his "blue moment"— agrees, noting the reaction he gets to his new blue hair is very different than with other colors. "[With other colors] I would get suspicious stares or disapproving glances. Ever since this blue stripe, I see people glance at it and I see their expressions mostly go to smiles. It's kind of bizarre, because that doesn’t happen if you color your hair orange. There must be something about the blue that doesn’t offend, [but rather] attracts. Blue is one of the kindest colors."
GettyImages-494099410Photo: Rich Polk/Getty Images.
The argument can also be made that blue hair is a way of taking back one's sense of self — as demonstrated by the celebs listed above, who were all experiencing shifts in their lives and careers pre-blueing. Experts say that when women find themselves defined by a certain aspect — specifically relationships — that dynamic shifts and it can lead to a desire to reclaim a separate identity and reinvent one's self.

Dr. Erica Slotter, a social psychologist and assistant professor at Villanova University, notes that when involved in a romantic relationship, many women's sense of identity changes. "We tend to become more similar to our partners over time. We take on some of their characteristics and they take on some of ours. Essentially, we create a sense of ourselves within the context of the relationship. So, it follows that when a relationship ends, our sense of identity has to change again. Specifically, we have to renegotiate who we are in the absence of a partner who was influential in shaping us."

Dr. Slotter says that the change to who you are after a breakup contributes to a reaction called self-concept clarity (SCC). "Low levels of SCC tend to predict emotional distress and poorer well-being. We find that after the end of a relationships, people feel that their identity is changing and this predicts them feeling less certain about who they are." So what better way to create your independent identity and start off on a new chapter of your life than by going balls to the wall with a unique, unexpected hair color?

Traditionally, when a woman was looking to reinvent herself or emotionally detach herself from a look, a change in hairstyle, with guidelines, of course, was the way to go. Not so anymore, says Houtenbos — the rules have been thrown out and it's the wild, wild west of hair. "The color thing has nothing to do anymore with 'does it flatter me?' It's just about making an arbitrary choice that doesn’t really relate to anything else." In short: You do you.
GettyImages-456897706Photo: Amanda Edwards/Getty Images.
Darling sees a connection with this identity exploration and communication by hair. "Blue is really ethereal and it's also associated with the throat chakra, so it's very good for expressing yourself clearly and for hearing other people," she says. "Maybe that's why the color is great for women who are trying to come out — they're like 'I need to express myself and this color is going to help me do it.'"

Says Varichon, "To dye one’s hair blue was still iconoclastic a few years ago. But if culture imprints its customs on individuals, it is also an invention of individuals. And as the number of young people choosing this color for their hair is growing, it becomes less and less surprising." Meaning a blue 'do is most likely not going to elicit questions about your post-breakup mental state of mind. Well, depending on how conservative your social circle is.

If you do decide to do the blue, Darling urges you to do so responsibly — meaning don't get it done and be miserable about the choice or present yourself in a negative way — you aren't doing yourself, or your hair, any big favors.

"With that color you need to make sure that you're ready for it, because you're representing it in other people's brains. So if you're not going to be the beautiful characteristics of blue, don't make your hair blue," adds Darling. "I feel that way about every color. And as a hair colorist, I feel responsible for making sure that people are wearing a color that matches their personality."

One Day After Deadly Attacks, World Asks: Why Paris?

This is a breaking news story. More information will be added as it becomes available. For full coverage of the attacks on Paris, click here.
Paris is reeling from its second major terror attack within the span of a year. Friday night’s series of attacks on a sports stadium, concert hall, and several restaurants come just 10 months after the attacks on satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, which resulted in 17 deaths. Additionally, in August, three American men, two of them military service members on vacation, helped take down a gunman on a train between Amsterdam and Paris.

The most recent attack on Paris killed 129 people and injured more than 350 others. The Islamic State group, also known as ISIS, claimed responsibility for the attacks in a statement released on Saturday morning.

The statement has not been verified, but its authors write that the attack was in response to France's “insulting the Prophet, bragging of fighting Islam in France and for attacking Muslims in the Caliphate with their planes.” The statement warns: “This attack is only the beginning of a storm and an advertisement for those who wish to think on its lessons.”France, because it was attacked cowardly, shamelessly, violently, France will be merciless against the barbarians...French President François Hollande spoke out harshly following Friday's devastation: "My dear compatriots. What happened last night in Paris, and in Saint Denis by the Stade de France, is an act of war. France, because it was attacked cowardly, shamelessly, violently, France will be merciless against the barbarians of Daesh [the Islamic State]."

World leaders, including President Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron, have expressed support and willingness to stand with France as further events unfold.

After the death and devastation on Friday, many around the world are asking: Why France? According to the Pew Research Center, France is home to the second-largest population of Muslims in the European Union, second only to Germany.

However, French Muslims make up a larger percentage of the country’s population than they do in Germany, comprising 7.5% of the French population. There is also a high rate of immigration from North Africa to France, bringing in immigrants who are often Muslim. Between immigration and birth rates, the Muslim population in France is expected to rise from 4.7 million in 2010 to 6.9 million in 2030, an increase of nearly 150%.France's non-Muslim and Muslim residents have sometimes been at odds. Laws banning the display of religious symbols in schools has caused tension and public service employees have been criticized for unfairly impacting Muslim women who choose to wear a hijab.

In 2011, France passed a law specifically banning niqabs and burqas, two different types of face-concealing garments that are sometimes worn by conservative Muslim women. In late 2005, the death of two teenage boys ignited a set of riots around France in which racism and discrimination against Muslims were suggested as contributing factors.

France also has its problems with homegrown terrorism. According to The Guardian, nearly half of the more than 3,000 Europeans who have traveled to join ISIS are coming from France. The secular-leaning nation has made efforts to stem the tide of radicalization, but is hampered in part by its own incarceration system. The BBC reports that three of the four perpetrators of the January 2015 Charlie Hebdo attacks met in prison, where at least one of the members, Amedy Coulibaly, seems to have been radicalized. Much like American prisons, French prisons suffer from demographic issues — more than half of those imprisoned in France are Muslim, making it easy for jailed militants to recruit for their cause from those already marginalized by society.

Friday's attacks, like the Charlie Hebdo attacks, which targeted the magazine's offices and a kosher supermarket, were mostly carried out at businesses and venues likely to be frequented by locals. Rather than the Eiffel Tower or the Champs-Elysées, the attackers targeted restaurants and a music venue in the trendy Right Bank, where they were more likely to find Parisian youth than an international crowd. The choice of targets echoes the ISIS statement that it is France, in particular, that is the target.

How Will The Paris Attacks Affect American Elections?

hillarybernieembedPhoto: Matt Baron/REX Shutterstock
Friday night’s devastating terrorist attack on France may prove to have political ripples far outside Europe, as American presidential candidates turn their attention from the economy to issues of national security. CBS News, the network hosting tonight’s Democratic debate, already announced a change in its plans, with questions focusing more on terrorism, national security, and foreign relations.

The 2012 election cycle, much like what we have so far seen of 2016, focused primarily on issues of jobs and economic security after the 2008 banking crash that sent the United States into an economic spiral. The recession caused long-term unemployment to rise to 10% by late 2009, leaving most voters more concerned about what was in their wallets than foreign policy.

The shift in focus will likely benefit Hillary Clinton, the only candidate with significant experience in foreign affairs. Clinton served as Secretary of State under the Obama Administration from 2009 to 2013, when she was replaced by John Kerry. Clinton’s term as Secretary of State saw a significant amount of international turmoil, from the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama Bin Laden to the rise of the Arab Spring movement. She will have a solid history of international experience and dealing with terrorism to draw from. Her Democratic challengers, Bernie Sanders and Martin O’Malley, are less experienced.

On the other side of the aisle, Republican candidates will have to attempt to refrain from allowing anti-immigration stances to turn xenophobic and nativist. In an interview with Fox News, candidate Ted Cruz used the Paris attacks, which have been claimed by the Islamic State group (ISIS) as its doing, as an excuse to call on Obama to not allow refugees from the Syrian civil war into the United States. Candidate Donald Trump also brought his personal brand of nuanced rhetoric to bear on the topic, saying that France’s strict gun laws contributed to the tragedy.

Body-Cleansing Oils Will Save Your Skin This Winter

If you haven't already noticed, we love oils. We slather them on our faces, in our hair— heck, we even remove a day's worth of makeup with the stuff. But using them as body cleansers is a whole new idea, even for us.

It makes perfect sense if you think about it: Cleansing oils formulated for the face effectively remove dirt and grime without sacrificing much-needed moisture, so why not apply that concept to body wash? "[Body-cleansing oils] work to gently cleanse the skin without stripping or drying," says cosmetic chemist Ron Robinson of BeautyStat.com. "This differs from traditional cleansers that have higher levels of cleansing agents in a water-based formula." Translation: They're perfect for winter's driest months.

Like most cleansing oils, those made for the body work best when applied to dry skin before jumping in the shower. (Bonus: You'll save water.) Simply rub a few pumps into skin, and once the water's going, the oil will turn into a light, milky lather. You'll immediately notice that your skin feels cleanand moisturized.

Ahead, we've rounded up the best cleansing oils to get you through the winter months — sans dry skin.

This shower oil is pure decadence. Not only does it smell (and feel) incroyable, it leaves the skin feeling moisturized and even doubles as a shaving oil.

This sulfate- and fragrance-free cleansing oil is a godsend for dry or eczema-prone skin. It's formulated with jojoba oil and aloe vera leaf juice, meaning it hydrates and soothes on contact.

Just when we thought Josie Maran's argan oil couldn't get any better, we discovered her cleansing oil for the body. This one combines her signature oil with avocado, safflower, and grape seed oils for even more hydration. The result is a rich cleanser that still feels lightweight on the skin.

If you've got sensitive skin, this one from Avène is the way to go. It's fragrance-free and super gentle, so there's not much chance of it causing irritation. You can even use it as a bath oil to calm irritated skin.

Although this oil doesn't lather up like most other cleansing oils do, it left our skin feeling so plump and hydrated, we decided to skip moisturizing post-shower.

NSFW: The Instagram Fight For Pubic Hair

$

At first glance, this might look like a typical racy Instagram post: a shot of someone's bikini bottoms. But as you look closer, you start to notice some dark shading around the suit. Yep, that's pubic hair — something many women are told to hide at all costs. Welcome to the Instagram account of photographer Ashley Armitage, where dreamy teen scenes of girls lounging by a pool are peppered with body hair (lots of it), tampons, period stains, and granny panties.

"I’m interested in creating a platform for girls, by girls, completely the female gaze," says Armitage (who is also starting Girls by Girls Agency with another female photographer). The narrative that emerges throughout Armitage's work shows the behind-the-scenes of female young adulthood — how girls create femininity, live in it, and break its supposed "rules."

Much of the project is collaborative: "It’s often both me and the models deciding what we want to create together, and both parties have agency. I'm giving the woman power, not taking it from her," Armitage says. "My friend who did the pubic hair photo, she's always like, 'Oh, take photos of my leg hair...take photos of my pubic hair; it looks so cute today.' [And I thought], now is a good time to post this photo of my friend's natural body, up close. It says, 'Hey, we have a choice. This is beautiful, too."

Click through to see a sampling of Armitage's images — and the internet's reaction to them.

Armitage has consistently embraced body hair in her images and has been kicked off Instagram a few times though her followers' reactions to her work have always been warm. "It started positive," she says. "A bunch of women said 'amen,' 'thank you so much,' 'we need this type of representation.'" But when Armitage posted this photo, everything changed.

"I wasn't expecting that much of a negative reaction," explains Armitage. "But then one person came in and said something really hateful, tagged their friends in it, and those people came in and tagged their friends." The criticisms snowballed — as often happens on the internet.

Commenters began scrolling through the rest of Armitage's feed as well, complaining about earlier photos that also featured pubic hair. "I was watching every single commenter, and there were 45-year-old dads with Instagram photos on their profiles with their daughters and their wives. They were commenting on this photo of my 17-year-old friend, calling her a whore," Armitage says.

"It would be so sad to me [if] a young girl already has in her mind that the natural body she will grow into is unhygienic, and [if] it was already ingrained in the boy's mind to shame and police [a] body that is not [his]."

That particular photo was flagged and taken down, but Armitage decided to repost it with this caption: "This photo does not break the rules of Instagram. This does not show 'sexual intercourse, genitals, or fully nude buttocks,' as their rules say aren't allowed. There are millions of photos of girls in bikinis on Instagram. The censorship of a photo that shows a natural bikini line is like saying a woman's natural body is obscene, abnormal, and unacceptable. It's like saying that in order to be decent and acceptable, we must shave."

"For me, the point of this is to take the hyper-feminine, take the clichéand things that would typically be used against us, and reclaim it and maybe subvert it," Armitage says.

"I think my photography from afar will look like another teenage chick flick, and [when] you kind of go closer to it, you see, oh, the girl putting on lipstick has a ton of lip hair," Armitage says.

"I want to show more representation," she continues.

Most of Armitage's models are her friends, and she takes care to include their viewpoints in her work. "I’m giving them a chance to represent themselves as they want to be represented, so it’s a huge collaborative process," she explains.

Body hair is common in Armitage's world in Seattle, and dyeing armpit hair is a trend. "I’m not saying shaving is bad," Armitage clarifies. "I feel like it’s totally a choice, and I want to show that."

"I think I live in a pretty liberal bubble," she adds.

So, despite the trolls, Armitage doesn't see her mission changing anytime soon. "Posting that [blue bikini] photo and receiving the slew of negative comments confirmed that this is what I need to keep doing, and this is what needs to be done," she says. "There were a lot of real powerful ladies chiming in, saying, 'thank you so much.'"

Climate Change Really Does Contribute To Terrorism

When Senator Bernie Sanders was asked to defend his statements that climate change is the nation's most pressing national security threat, he didn't back down — and he's 100% right. Climate change is already destabilizing governments around the world and it's only going to get worse.

"Climate change is directly related to the growth of terrorism," Sanders said. "And if we do not get our act together and listen to what the scientists say, you're gonna see countries all over the world — this is what the CIA says — they're gonna be struggling over limited amounts of water, limited amounts of land to grow their crops. And you're gonna see all kinds of international conflict."

The connection between climate change and the rise of terrorist threats isn't a direct line, but it is clear. In July, the Pentagon released a report to Congress that cited climate change as a major factor that will exacerbate national security threats and risks. “The Department of Defense's primary responsibility is to protect national security interests around the world,” a press release about the report said. When security includes questions of how families get enough food, how poverty might lead people to radical religious movements, and how natural resources destabilize governments, climate change is crucial.

“It is in this context,” the report reads, “that the department must consider the effects of climate change — such as sea level rise, shifting climate zones, and more frequent and intense severe weather events — and how these effects could impact national security.”

2015 is on track to be the hottest year ever recorded. International leaders are scheduled to meet in Paris for a climate change summit at the end of November.

We all tune into the presidential debates because we're involved, responsible adults who care about the political process. That's mostly true, unless a beautifully timed camera switch produces a glorious moment like this.

A perfectly timed moment captured the reaction of this poor fellow in the audience, who must have had a gun lobby hiding under his bed as a child rather than the boogeyman. We're all for gun control, but we've never had such an intense reaction to the words "gun lobby"— no matter how frightening the statistics are. Did he just leave his phone set on too high a vibration setting? Is he actually Bruce Wayne and the words "gun lobby" make him flash back to his parents' deaths outside a theater lobby? Did Hillary Clinton guess the magic phrase that turns off all his electronic robotic settings? The world may never know.

Take care of yourself, you poor, frightened intern. You seem a little on edge.

I woke up on Saturday morning to the realization that we have monsters living among us, some of whom were born and raised in France, as I was. Seven coordinated terror attacks: 129 people dead, 352 injured — 99 in critical condition. Those are the facts.

I am a 34-year-old French woman who was raised in a Paris suburb and who has lived in the city most of my adult life. I have resided in London since March of this year, and have also spent time in Tokyo and New York. But I have never felt like anything other than a Parisian, and I know today that I will always be a Parisian.

That sense of belonging comes from my love of social and political freedoms, irreverence, and nonconformism. I am proud to be a part of a city that celebrates the values I cherish. It also stems from a feeling of shared experience. Today, I am wounded and grieving, just as Paris is wounded and grieving, for the second time this year. The attackers have betrayed me as they have betrayed our city and country.

The neighborhoods they targeted, the 10th and the 11th arrondissements, where I once lived, are symbols of the ethnic and social diversity in eastern Paris, home to much of the city’s liberal, educated, and creative youth. These are the same youth who avoided looking for easy scapegoats following the attacks on Charlie Hebdo in January, the same youth that fiercely opposed the war in Iraq, the same youth who believe that a plethora of beliefs and backgrounds are positive for society. These are the same youth that are profoundly attached to the values of equality, freedom, and democracy.
'Même Pas Peur,' read one memorable sign in the Place de la Republique — Still not afraid. This weekend, the human race revealed its most ugly side. But we also witnessed its most beautiful side. The offer of refuge to people needing shelter was instantaneous, spread through the trending hashtag #PorteOuverte (open door). Spontaneous vigils were held at Place de la République, and despite official recommendations not to go out, queues of volunteers formed at hospitals early on Saturday morning to donate blood to victims.

Même pas peur,” read one memorable sign in the Place de la Republique: Still not afraid. The reality, however, is that many are afraid, and understandably so. But crucially, we remain unwavering in our beliefs. The immediate empathy and solidarity expressed across Europe, in the U.S., and throughout the rest of the world make us feel part of a larger community and encourage us to stay strong. We stay strong in order to show terrorists, through the experiences of those who have endured such attacks in Paris, Madrid, London, New York, Beirut, Istanbul, and beyond, that they will not win out.

I myself am biracial, and a fervent defender of multiculturalism. Multiculturalism is not the cause of attacks such as Friday’s. Neither is religion. In the words of Anouar Kbibech, the president of one of the leading Muslim organizations in France, "Islam states that taking the life of one innocent is tantamount to taking the lives of all humanity. This act has killed humanity 118 times" (the number of deaths at the time Kbibech was interviewed).

So in the wake of this tragedy, I find myself asking: What went wrong in the failed journeys of these young French terrorists who so passionately see France as their mortal enemy? How can we improve the lives of those who feel disenfranchised in order to avoid them becoming monsters, too?
In the wake of this tragedy, I find myself asking: What went wrong in the failed journeys of these young French terrorists?Certainly, there are significant questions over foreign policy. We must invest in adequate security and we must cut ties with those who only want to do us harm. But social inequalities in France and other European countries have contributed to the growing number of young men (and it is often young men) who are attracted to the promise of brotherhood offered by those keen to exploit their weaknesses. As a country, we also have long-term work to do to improve education, urbanization, and integration on our own soil.

Sometimes we pay a heavy price for freedom, a value that ISIS detests and calls a perversion. But our determination is intact. For the moment, Paris is in mourning. But I strongly believe that Paris and the Parisians will smile and laugh again soon. They are already making their voices heard. They will remain free, and that will be our greatest honor to the dead. We will never surrender or let a group such as ISIS dictate who we should be or how we should live.
I know today that I will always be a Parisian.Postscript: My Eurostar train from Paris to London on Sunday evening was half empty. The atmosphere was solemn. On arrival, to my and the other passengers’ surprise, the driver left his microphone on and decided to play us all Daft Punk and Pharell Williams’ shamelessly upbeat house song “Get Lucky” over the intercom.

At first, it seemed to be a mistake; a bizarre choice at such a somber time. Then it started to make more sense. Most of the passengers had indeed gotten lucky that night. And I liked to think the carefree anthem was meant as a reminder that we must continue to dance in the face of adversity, that we must never apologize when we “raise our cups to the stars.” As the song says over and again: We’ve come too far to give up who we are.

Khloé Says Lamar's Recovery Will Take "At Least A Year"

Khloé Kardashian provided an update on Lamar Odom's condition during an on-air interview with Ryan Seacrest on Monday. While the ex-NBA star has come off life support and, according to Khloé, his organs are mostly recovered, it sounds like he still has a long road ahead of him. "I think people hear he's off machines and they're like, 'Oh great, he's like gonna be running out of there,' and that's not the case," Kardashian explained, adding that Odom has to relearn the basics. "I know he’ll get there. It will just take time," she said. How long, exactly? At the very least, a year, Khloé said.

"What the doctors tell me is, 'We don’t have a crystal ball' — they love to keep reiterating that to me. I’m very optimistic and I want to believe he can [live a normal life]. There are no promises, but if he’s willing to do the work — and I know the speech therapy, or the occupational therapy, or just all the cognitive stuff I’m sure it’s really hard for him and frustrating — but if he’s willing to do it, I don’t see why not. But it will take at least a year, at least."

Seacrest asked the reality star, who is currently dating basketball player James Harden, whether she is planning to be in contact with Odom every day for the next year. "I do as of now, yeah. I don't see why not. I love Lamar... I don't see how I could not be involved," she replied. Kardashian, whose body-image book came out earlier this month, has been caring for her estranged husband since he landed in the hospital in October. Kardashian called off their impending divorce shortly thereafter, and has been supporting him throughout his health crisis, from acting as a medical advisor to throwing him a small birthday party. We're glad to hear she'll continue to be there for Odom's tough road to recovery.

8 Travel Hacks You Need To Know This Season

Traveling during the holidays can test the patience of even the most seasoned travel pros. Wall-to-wall traffic, long lines at the airport, and weather delays can all cause headaches. The idea of spending extended quality time with your nearest and dearest can induce panic. Not to mention the costs associated with celebrating “the most wonderful time of the year.” Airline, hotel, and car rental reservations are in high demand; there’s no such thing as a last-minute deal. Or holiday deal, period.

Instead of getting stressed out, get smart. Take a deep breath and keep your plans in perspective — and holiday spirit intact — with these brilliant travel hacks.

Plan Gift-Giving In Advance
It may seem obvious, but you’ll save big on airline baggage fees if you mail gifts ahead of the holidays. Services like Luggage Forward will even ship your suitcases. “If you must bring gifts, don't wrap,” says travel writer Susan C. Kim. “Pack gift bags and fold-flat tissue that slide right inside the exterior luggage pocket, then wrap at your destination and avoid having to ask your host for wrapping paper. Boom!”

Clear Your Cookies
When it comes to booking airfare, I admit, I’m a bit obsessive. I hit refresh every 30 seconds, hoping to score a cheaper deal. To get the best fares, delete your web browser’s cache and cookies. Or, try using a different internet browser. When you search the web, you leave a trail of virtual crumbs. Some airlines use this information to track your activity, and that can lead to higher airfares.

Travel On The Actual Holiday
Hands down, the day before Thanksgiving is the busiest travel day of the year. “If you’re looking to save money and avoid the craziness, travel on the actual holiday,” says lifestyle writer Liana Lozada. “Most people want to arrive before the holiday, so flight demands drop the day-of.” Fly or drive super early or late — when everyone else is asleep — to avoid crowds and long lines.

Check Into A Pod Hotel
If you’re stuck on a long layover, get caught up on sleep at a pod hotel. This new breed of hotels provide a quiet, albeit postage stamp-sized, place to rest your head and salvage your travel sanity. “Man oh man, did it change my disposition!” says Pam Mandel of the travel blog Nerd’s Eye View. “I had a quiet place to put my stuff down, a shower, and a loo. I spent a few hours tucked away in that private space, so when I boarded my next long-haul flight, I was really relaxed.”

Download Your Airline’s App
As much as I adore travel apps like FlightAware and GateGuru, nothing gets me up-to-the-minute updates as fast as my airline carrier’s app. These do-it-all apps allow me to check in, track a flight, and keep tabs on my luggage the whole time. Other nifty features include airport maps and access to free in-flight entertainment. Not all airline apps are created equal – Delta, United, and American Airlines are among my faves. When rebooking is necessary, human help is still irreplaceable.

Bring Your Own Entertainment
Prepare for travel delays with pre-packed entertainment. Travel writer and Eco-Chick editor Starre Vartan suggests packing a great potboiler book, your favorite TV show downloaded to your device, a bunch of podcasts, a yoga/relaxation recording or app, and extra snacks. In other words, “anything to make you feel more comfortable and happy if you don't get where you're going when you'd like,” says Vartan. “Hope for the best, plan for the worst!”

Pay For A Day Pass
When Georgia Freedman travels somewhere pricey (or during a pricey season, like the holidays), she stays somewhere affordable and pays for a day pass to a fancy hotel's pool and spa area. “This works best in Asia, where brands like Shangri-La almost always let people buy day passes to their wonderful pool areas,” she says. “If you can't get a day pass, many places will let you enjoy the facilities if you book a treatment.” If you’re stuck staying with family, a spa day may be the perfect way to escape and unwind.

Get A Free Upgrade
If you’re faithful to a particular airline, join its loyalty club. Frequent fliers get first dibs when upgrades are available. Some airlines take the cost spent on the ticket (a.k.a. fare class) into consideration, meaning if you paid top dollar, you may have an upgrade advantage over the person who booked a discounted ticket. When all else fails, just ask. I’ve received free upgrades in the past simply by flashing a smile, being polite, and asking nicely. I've had my best luck during off-peak days and times, as well as holidays.

Discovering What Makes Scandinavians So Happy

Taco Bell Just Made A Historic Announcement

Soon, the only reason to feel bad after eating Taco Bell for breakfast may be the fact that you just ate Taco Bell for breakfast. The chain, whose a.m. offerings include biscuit tacos and egg and hashbrown “crunchwraps,” is the most recent fast food brand to announce the transition to more humane, cage-free eggs in its 6,000 U.S. locations.

The trend has been picking up steam recently, with McDonald’s announcing earlier this fall that its long-anticipated all-day breakfast will soon also be cage-free. And while Taco Bell is late to the cage-free party, Grub Street notes that, if all goes according to plan, Taco Bell’s eggs will be cage-free by December 31, 2016, making it “the first national quick service restaurant to completely implement the change.”

"Delivering a sustainable and safe egg supply to Taco Bell restaurants nationwide in one year is possible due to the brand's large yet flexible infrastructure, and years of close collaboration with our partners," Liz Matthews, Taco Bell's chief food innovation officer, explained in a press release.

Starbucks and Panera plan to take four years to phase out conventional eggs and McDonald's will take a decade to do the same. (McDonald’s, it should be noted, uses some two billion eggs annually, compared to Taco Bell's 130 million. So, that's a lot more hens to liberate.)

According to Taco Bell, some 500,000 birds will benefit from the change, which is based on cage-free egg production standards set by the American Humane Society. As for what that really means for these animals? Well, that depends on the farmers, but at least they'll be free to walk around a bit.

How Chrissy Teigen Wears Her Second-Day Curls

"When I saw her outfit for the evening, I knew she needed something sexy and romantic to complement her sheer lace top," hairstylist Jen Atkin told us about the look she created on Chrissy Teigen for a dinner in Los Angeles last week.

While we can all admit it doesn't take much to make the model look alluring, it was this unexpected take on Bridget Bardot's signature half-up style that took her sheer blouse to a playful and carefree place. Translation: It's the perfect vintage-inspired balance for a sexy ensemble. But the best part? It's great for dirty hair. (Win-Win!)
This is great for girls who want to restyle their second- or third-day hair!"This is great for girls who want to restyle their second- or third-day hair," Atkin told us. "We decided to keep her previously curled hair and added a half-up pony."

To pull off the look at home, start with curls, whether natural or done with an iron. (You can use this tutorial for help.) Then, Atkin suggests prepping your hair with dry shampoo for both volume and texture.
embed2Photo: Donato Sardella/ Getty Images.
To keep the look soft and carefree (which is key!), don't make your part perfect. Instead, "Use your fingers to loosely gather from the ears up to the crown of the head, securing with a bungee elastic," Atkin says. Once your elastic is secure, use a boar-bristle brush (Atkin used a Mason Pearson) to gently lift and loosen the hair in the pony, which will create volume on top. (Just press the brush flush against the scalp and lift to loosen softly.)

Finally, Atkins says to use your fingers to soften the hair around the face, letting a few stray pieces fall out. Use a 1-inch curling iron to re-curl any pieces around the face that need touching-up and set the style by misting with a light-hold hairspray.

The FDA's New Produce Rule Should Have Existed Long Before Now

Foodborne illnesses happen a lot (we mean a lot), and every time yet another salmonella or listeria outbreak pops up, you probably wonder: Why? Just how do so many contaminated foods make it through whatever screening processes the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has in place to prevent this very thing from happening? Here's the deal: Such processes didn't really exist until last week — at least not on a large, widespread scale.

In a new set of rules established last Friday, the FDA announced that produce importers will now be required to prove the safety and cleanliness of their fruits and vegetables before putting them on the market. Michael R. Taylor, the FDA's deputy commissioner for foods and veterinary medicine, acknowledged that last September's salmonella contamination in cucumbers partly drove the decision to put these regulations in place: "The rules will help better protect consumers from food-borne illness and strengthen their confidence that modern preventive practices are in place, no matter where in the world the food is produced,” he explained.

Of course, the Produce Safety Rule, to use its official name, didn't arrive simply due to recent outbreaks. Fruits and veggies have been some of the main sources of food-borne illnesses historically, with contaminated fruits causing half of all listeria outbreaks between 1998 and 2012. Meanwhile, row-grown vegetables were partly responsible for 80% of all E. coli outbreaks. According to the Associated Press, most farmers do follow good safety practices, but problem foods slip through. So, like we said: How didn't an official cleanliness requirement exist before now?

The recent announcement also listed measures that produce growers can take to prevent contamination, including maintaining good water and soil quality, cleaning equipment and facilities regularly, and making sure all employees are in good health. In a moment of impressive foresight, the FDA will require a third party to verify these conditions (rather than simply taking providers at their word).

Even as these rules take effect, we suggest you still be sure to make good produce choices; always wash your fruits and vegetables, and store them properly to avoid spoiling.

Miley Cyrus Helps Ex-Fiancé Liam Hemsworth Adopt The Most Adorable Puppy

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth might not be on the path to marriage anymore. But the former couple is still close enough to make important decisions together — like whether or not the Mockingjay star should become a dog dad. Turns out the answer to that question is: absolutely.

The "Wrecking Ball" singer and her ex-fiancé synced up at an event for Wylder's Holistic Pet Center over the weekend, and even picked out an adorable pup for the actor to take home.

"Thanks @mileycyrus for loving dogs as much as we do!! You helped find this gigantic, 6 month old puppy a new home," the Wylder Pet Center shared on Instagram, along with a sweet pic of the proud new pup owner and his oversized canine. "@liamhemsworth you will give this deserving baby a great life!"

Everything — and we mean everything — about this photo is putting us into straight-up snuggle mode. Also: that FACE. Is there anything better than that face?!
Of course, Cyrus didn't leave the event empty handed, either. She took home her own pup — and by "took home" and "her own," we mean she adopted one on behalf of buds Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips and his girlfriend, actress Katy Weaver — so that Miley's dog, Milk, would have a pup to play with when they visit Coyne's abode.
Bold gift choice, right? That's so Miley.

The Ladies Own The Huntsman Winter's War Posters

The movie maybe titled The Huntsman Winter's War, but newly released posters indicate that the sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman is all about the ladies.

Not only does Charlize Theron return as the gloriously evil Ravenna — the only reason to watch the first movie, really — but she's joined by Emily Blunt as her sister, "The Ice Queen" Freya, and Jessica Chastain as "The Warrior" Sara. Freya dons a costume that equals Ravenna's in regal splendor, but has a chilly edge. Meanwhile, Sara rocks leather pants and wields some horns. And yes, you can also gaze upon Chris Hemsworth's face, if you want, but who really cares about him when these fierce ladies are here.

Universal also released an official synopsis for the movie, which gives us the necessary backstory.

"Long before the evil Queen Ravenna (Theron) was thought vanquished by Snow White’s blade, she watched silently as her sister, Freya (Blunt), suffered a heartbreaking betrayal and fled their kingdom," the synopsis reads. "With Freya’s ability to freeze any enemy, the young ice queen has spent decades in a remote wintry palace raising a legion of deadly huntsmen — including Eric (Hemsworth) and warrior Sara (Chastain) — only to find that her prized two defied her one demand: Forever harden your hearts to love."

Though Ravenna does die at the end of Snow White and the Huntsman, she's apparently able to be resurrected thanks to the Magic Mirror. Then, "the wicked sisters threaten this enchanted land with twice the darkest force it’s ever seen."

So, this movie is about two sisters, one of whom has the power to freeze things, but runs away and lives in an ice castle. Huh, that sounds a bit like a certain very popular animated Disney film. Will Emily Blunt be singing "Let It Go" at some point? (She cansing.) The similarities have not escaped people on Twitter.

Frankly, we're still into it. We'll take any excuse to watch these women kick ass.
